POR EL AMOR DE LOS LIBROS
Por el Amor de los Libros was an author/illustrator
event held in honor of the independent and bilingual bookstore
Liberia Martinez on May 17th. The day was sponsored by the Orange
County Academy of the Arts, a K-8 charter school in Santa Ana.
To pump up our crowd of over 50 people, authors Barb Odanaka,
Stacia Deutsch, Marilyn Gould, Joyce Lee Wong, and Kim Bacceilla
read from their wonderful pieces of literature, discussed their
writing process, and energized us with their love of story telling.
Helping to bring out the artist in all of us, illustrator Norma
Samuelson led a workshop on how to make a picture book dummy.
Children's book illustrators J.H. Everett and Marilyn Scott Waters
donated some of their incredible art and stopped by to draw with
the kids. Priscilla Garcia Burris also donated some wonderful books
and sketches for the raffle.
During the event, the children wrote and illustrated pieces
describing their favorite books, and almost every child was able to
walk away with a free book, artist sketch, or goodies donated from
Staples. Some OCEAA students also were able to share their poetry
with the crowd. The energy was high and positive...we LOVE Libreria
Martinez, and we all LOVE books! Thanks to 'Skateboard Mom,' Mr.
Martinez got geared up as rolled through his store on a skateboard!
Thank you to our authors, illustrators, and to OCEAA and its
parents for their support for this amazing event!

COOKIES AND BOOKS!
'I've been working with an amazing bunch of sixth graders at Newport
Coast Elementary school to review my current novel in progress:
SUPER NOVA. Their intuitiveness, humor, and insight into
storytelling truly inspire me, and I can't thank them enough for
spending their lunch with me. The comments they have given me have
already helped to make SUPER NOVA such a better novel. I will truly
miss them when they move on to middle school! I send them a big,
super THANK YOU!'
Lori presents at schools and festivals all over Southern
California. She had a blast reading to kids and grown-ups on the
Animal Stage at the OC Book Festival. Monty the Ball python and
Lucy, the golden retriever, helped Lori share her 'animal stories!
This spring was an exciting and fun season! Here
are a few photos from the following schools: St. John's, Circle
View, OCEAA, Viejo, and Newport Coast.
